On June 8, 2004, a transit of Venus (where Venus crosses the face of
the sun) occurred. It was the first one since December of 1882, which
gave Sousa the inspiration for his "Transit of Venus" March. This
delightful 6/8 march has been put in the key of Bb. Sousa used Db for
his band arrangement, A for the orchestral version and G for the piano
arrangement so he was not attached to any one key. Parts have been
taken from both the band and orchestral versions to come to an easier,
yet authentic, Sousa sound. I have tried to arrange the march for a
concert setting, without all the doubling associated with Sousa's
outdoor arrangements.
