While it is scored for 2 trumpets and 2 trombones, a horn can be used for the first trombone, and a baritone for the second one. It can also use a tuba in place of the second trombone giving you a quartet that can be used year after year with slightly different instrumentation. A version is also available for a sax quartet in the same key, so the parts can be mixed.

Variations on La Follia - Vivaldi

    Instrumentation:
    DIFFICULTY:   MEDIUM-DIFFICULT
    Available as a:

    • Clarinet Trio (2 clarinets and bass clarinet)
    • Brass Trio 1 (2 trumpets and baritone or trombone)

La Follia is a piece that many composers have written variations on in the past four centuries. The Variations on 'La Follia' are Vivaldi's version for this most famous melody. They were written in 1705, just four years after Corelli's famous set. Although the piece is long, only about half of the total piece is used here. Because each variation is complete in itself, some may be left out to shorten the piece or if too difficult for the performers. All versions are MD or grade 4 in difficulty.
