This is the most famous of the four Norwegian Dances, and one of Grieg's most popular pieces. It is in a simple ABA form, with the B section a variation of the A melody. The A section shows the delicacy of the band while the B shows off the humor of the composer.

    Here is a neglected masterpiece by Sousa now scored for modern band. It comes complete with an easier key (2 to 3 flats vs. 5 to 6), a better range for the upper brass and woodwinds, and simplified woodwind parts. All this, yet retaining its unique Sousa character. This march will make a fine addition to your library.

    Here is an exciting piece from the classics arranged for modern band. Your students will love the rich oriental harmonies and the sudden changes in dynamics. Clarinet and flute obbligato phrases have been simplified to make them very playable for students. What a great way to end a concert!

    A little harder than Chocolate, this is another fine dance from the Nutcracker. This one is in an A-B-A form with the A sections forming a set of variations. The B section is slower and contrasts with the speed of the A sections. This can be a good place to teach some musical forms while playing an exciting piece of music. Be sure to purchase this along with Chocolate for a rip-roaring ending to any concert! (Of course you don't have to get both...)

    Probably the most famous of the Lyric pieces, Wedding Day at Troldhauen depicts a wedding at his home near Bergen, Norway. The Solitary Traveler is a lilting waltz with the accent on beat three. It should be played in one beat per measure. Shepherd's Boy is a beautiful melody in six-eight (played in a slow two), which features an oboe solo. It was one of Grieg's favorites and one he orchestrated himself. The March of the Trolls is the most difficult piece of the suite with five note scale runs of 32nd notes. The boisterous first section is complimented by a lovely lyric middle section before the first section repeats.
